Abstract

This phenomenological study explores the crisis leadership experiences of school heads in managing natural disasters and emergencies at F. Bangoy Central Elementary School and F. Bangoy National High School. It investigates strategies for addressing emergencies, collaborative decision-making processes, and the impact of crisis leadership on school culture and community trust. Participants included school heads, DRRM Coordinators, and DAT members, chosen for their roles in addressing shared safety concerns between the schools. Using in-depth interviews and focus group discussions, five key themes emerged: proactive planning and coordination, collaboration and communication, leadership and role modelling, reflection and continuous improvement, and building trust and fostering a safety culture. Findings highlight those proactive measures, such as regular drills and evacuation protocols, minimizing chaos during emergencies. Collaborative efforts and transparent communication enhance coordination among school leaders, staff, and external authorities. Leadership plays a pivotal role, with calm and decisive actions reinforcing trust and confidence within the school community. Reflective practices, such as post-crisis debriefings, further strengthen adaptability in crisis management strategies. This study underscores the importance of an integrated approach to crisis leadership, combining proactive planning, collaboration, trust-building, and reflection to ensure safety, resilience, and a secure educational environment.
