Abstract

The wake of the pandemic drove the educational system to become the “new normal” environment in the school community in the country. The transition from the tradition to distance learning and then blended learning brought about changes to the teaching practices of the teachers, especially in the Araling Panlipunan subject. Furthermore, the adaption of the Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers in the new normal presents an approach appropriate to ensure the quality of education. The primary goal of the study was to assess the teaching practices and the level of competence of the Araling Panlipunan (AP) teachers using the PPST in the context of the new normal in secondary public schools in Sariaya, Quezon. The study used a descriptive and quantitative research design, utilizing the use of self-made questionnaires, and was conducted online with 47 AP teachers. The instrument covers the teaching practices of the AP teachers and the domains of the PPST, as well as their profiles. Moreover, the study determined the relationship between the teaching practices and the level of competence of the AP teachers and if the teaching practices can be a predictor of the level of competence of the AP teachers. The findings of the study revealed that the AP teachers are effectively utilizing their teaching practices to the students, and are highly competent according to the domains of the PPST. Furthermore, there is a significant relationship between the teaching practices and the level of competence of the AP teachers. It also revealed that teaching practices can be a predictor of the level of competence of AP teachers. The study recommended that AP teachers must continuously attend professional seminars and training for their professional growth and stay updated with the current trends in the area of specialization.
