Abstract
The purpose of this research was to determine the food preferences and consumption of junior high school students, as well as the factors that influence them. This study utilized a descriptive research design. The 352 respondents were junior high school students from a national high school in Leyte, Philippines chosen using stratified random selection. The study utilized a 3-point hedonic food preference scale and a 3-point hedonic food consumption scale. The information gathered was tabulated and frequency counts were applied. The findings of the study revealed that banana cue was the most preferred food of Grade 7 students, rice for Grade 8 and Grade 10 students, and chips for Grade 9 students. The most consumed food among all grade levels was rice. The factors that mainly influenced the food preferences of the students include the foods appeal to their senses, choices made by their family or parents, and availability of food. Food preference and consumption are important to be given much attention for a persons health lies on them. A future study should include a wider scope and include more respondents.
